This is the classic homemade soft breakfast cake, perfect to accompany milk, coffee, or tea. Fresh oranges make the dough moist and fragrant, while the chocolate chips add that delicious touch that makes it irresistible even for a snack.
The secret to a super soft orange and chocolate cake? Don’t underbeat the eggs: they need to become pale and foamy to incorporate air. Use untreated oranges and a little trick: coat the chocolate chips in a tablespoon of flour before adding them, so they don’t sink to the bottom.
This easy and quick breakfast cake is also perfect to prepare the night before: it’s even better the next day. It stays soft for 2-3 days if well sealed, but I’ll warn you… it finishes sooner.

Ingredients
- 3 eggs
- 120 g sugar
- 1 1/4 cups flour (the one you usually use)
- 3 tbsps potato starch
- 1 packet baking powder
- 1/2 cup orange juice
- orange zest
- 2 tbsps vegetable oil
- 1/4 cup chocolate chips
Steps
Beat the eggs with the sugar using an electric mixer.
Then add the flour with the potato starch and baking powder while mixing, add a pinch of salt, the oil, the orange juice and finish mixing.
Pour in the chocolate chips and fold by hand.
Grease and flour an 8-inch pan if you prefer a tall cake, and bake at 350°F in a preheated oven for about 30 minutes, do a skewer test and if needed, extend for 5 more minutes.
Remove from oven, let cool, sprinkle with powdered sugar and cut.
