SAN BIAGIO ROLLS from Procida, easy and quick recipe, soft typical sweets to enjoy at breakfast or snack, ready in just a few minutes and lemon-scented, simple and good.
The recipe for San Biagio Rolls from Procida is very simple, you prepare a shortcrust pastry-like dough with lemon peel, it couldn’t be otherwise, Procida is the island of lemons, and Strega liqueur. Then these cookies are baked in the oven.
Having Procida origins and almost being able to touch the island, I couldn’t not make these delicious San Biagio rolls from Procida, a humble sweet that encapsulates the scents of lemons, a typical fruit of Procida.
Strega liqueur is another typical ingredient of Campanian sweets. Historically, these sweets are made to honor the day of St. Biagio, martyr, celebrated on February 3rd.
They are taken to church to be blessed and then they can be eaten, just like bread on the day of St. Anthony.
St. Biagio is the protector of the throat. After being condemned for his Christianity to death by drowning, managing to walk on water and save himself, he was then beheaded.
On the island of Procida, there is a story of a doctor who became a martyr after saving a child who swallowed a fishbone, a typical food for islanders. Since then, it has been celebrated every year with the blessing of the throat.
