They belong to the large family of 'Dolci dei morti', the traditional sweets for November 1st, like Rame di Napoli or Ossa di morto, and as you know in Italy there are many of these specialties from North to South. The first important celebration after summer brings us back to the oven and the stove, and with the first cold days, scents of cinnamon and spices become a must of traditional kitchens. The Pane dei morti becomes a symbol of tradition linked to All Souls' Day and All Saints. Talking about these sweets we refer to an old recipe originating from Milan and widespread throughout much of Northern Italy, with small differences from place to place in the dough and in the shape, which usually recalls leaves. We are talking about dense, pasty, aromatic and very tasty cookies, rich in dried fruit, raisins, dried figs and cocoa — elements that characterize them, besides the fact that to make them you also use cookies such as amaretti or dry cookies. This trick was surely used, as with other recipes of the season, to recover old cookies that had been slightly spoiled over the summer. And now you might ask: a Sicilian, what does she know about pan dei morti? But my grandmother was from the North, and now the mystery is revealed! She used to tell me that once, to recover leftover cookies, she mixed everything adding cocoa and spices and something good was born again! Let's go to the kitchen now and prepare together the Milanese pan dei morti recipe, a real delight that celebrates a tradition that in Italy knows no borders!
