Flapjack (Great Britain)

Flapjack is also known as a cereal bar, oat bar, or oat slice, it is a baked bar cooked in a flat pan and cut into squares or rectangles, made of rolled oats, fat (usually butter), brown sugar, and golden syrup, similar to the North American granola bar.

Some flapjacks also contain maple syrup.

The word has been used since 1935 to describe an oat-based food.

It is called flapjack in the United Kingdom, Isle of Man, Ireland, and Newfoundland.

In other English-speaking countries, it is called by different names, such as cereal bar, oat bar, or (in Australia and New Zealand) oat slice.

In the United States and Canada, “flapjack” is a widely known, yet less commonly used, term for “pancake.”
