The decorated shortcrust masks are one of my first creations using my molds themed for Carnival.
I made them individually and decorated, but they can also be made thinner, so they can be paired, filled, and then decorated on the surface.
I used liquid food coloring, but powdered works fine too.
Even though the recipe is very simple, they make a great impression and the kids will be very happy.
Once decorated, let them dry well in the air so you can cover the plate with simple foil for storage without any problems.
If you like this fun Carnival recipe, make it yourself and send me the photos, if you like I’ll put them on my fb page under your name.

- 1 medium egg
- 1.5 oz extra virgin olive oil
- 1.6 oz sugar
- 1/2 tsp liquid vanilla
- 1/2 tsp baking powder
- grated zest of 1/2 lemon
- 1.5 cups all-purpose flour
- 5.3 oz powdered sugar
- as needed water
- 6 tbsps granulated sugar
- 3 different colored food colorings as desired
Tools
- 1 Cookie Cutter mask molds
Preparation of the Decorated Shortcrust Masks
Using a cake mixer, beat the egg and yolks with the sugar at high speed until a frothy mixture is obtained.
Then add the extra virgin olive oil, vanilla, baking powder, grated zest of 1/2 lemon and mix at low speed.
Gradually add the flour and work with the mixer until possible, then transfer everything to a work surface and complete the dough.
Wrap the obtained dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
After the time has passed, take the dough and roll out a not too thick sheet from which we will cut out the masks.
Prepare an oven tray lined with parchment paper, place the cut-out masks on it, and bake in a preheated oven at 350°F for 10-15 minutes keeping an eye on the cooking.
Once baked, let cool before decorating.
While they are cooling, prepare the sugar glaze by putting the powdered sugar in a glass and adding one teaspoon of water at a time, mixing until a thick yet not too liquid consistency is obtained.
Also prepare the colored decorations in three glasses, with 2 tablespoons of granulated sugar and a small dose of different food coloring in each glass.
Mix the food colorings well with the sugar to get the desired color intensity.
Once the masks have cooled, pour the sugar glaze over each mask covering the surface, then cover them with the colored sugar, obtaining masks of 3 colors and let them dry well in the air.
