Sicilian Fritters of Saint Martin

The Sicilian fritters of Saint Martin are really delicious leavened and fried sweets that are prepared on November 11th.
A typical Sicilian sweet made for the feast of the Saint. As you may have noticed, I have several typical recipes for Saint Martin on the blog, so I couldn’t not make this recipe.
An egg-free sweet with raisins and fennel seeds inside, it’s hard to stop at just one, they disappear in a flash.
If we taste them with the new wine, they will be perfect!!!
Just follow this recipe to celebrate Saint Martin’s day and replicate it, then you’ll tell me if you liked it.
If you make this or any of my other recipes on my blog, feel free to send me your photos and I’ll post them on my FB page in your name.

Ingredients to make Sicilian Fritters of Saint Martin

  • 1 cup water
  • 2 tbsps sugar
  • 1 tbsp fennel seeds
  • 1 tsp dry yeast
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • sunflower oil (for frying)
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/2 tbsp ground cinnamon

Preparing Sicilian Fritters of Saint Martin

  • First, soak the raisins in hot water for at least 20 minutes, then drain and set aside.
In a bowl, mix the water with the yeast and dissolve, then add the fennel seeds, the drained raisins, and finally add the flour, mixing the dough well.
You will obtain a dense mixture, at which point let it rise for about 1 hour and a half, or until it doubles.
Once risen, prepare a pan with oil, heat it, and set the flame to medium-high.
With the help of a teaspoon, take a bit of dough and drop it into the oil, continuing this way with all the dough.
Let them cook on all sides, then drain on absorbent paper and while still hot, roll them in the sugar and cinnamon mixture.

  • Once all fried and rolled in sugar, you can enjoy them while still warm.
    Enjoy your meal.
