Chaffle with Edible Flowers

The Chaffle with Edible Flowers concludes the “Flower Menu” for the column “Building the Menu”.

The chaffle originated in the United States as a creative solution within low-carb and keto diets (keto).

The term is a fusion of “cheese” and “waffle”, because the basic ingredients are egg and cheese, cooked in a waffle iron or mold.

It became popular around 2019, thanks to blogs and online communities dedicated to the ketogenic diet, who were seeking alternatives to bread and traditional waffles, but with very few carbohydrates.

The success of the chaffle is due to its simplicity, versatility, and compatibility with low-sugar diets.

I paired it with spiced chicken breast strips.

  • Difficulty: Easy

Ingredients

  • 4 eggs
  • 7 oz shredded mozzarella (pizza type)
  • as needed edible flowers

Tools

  • 1 Grill waffle

Steps

  • In a bowl, beat the egg, add the mozzarella, salt, pepper, and mix well.

(1 egg for every 1.7 oz of cheese)

Add the chopped edible flowers and mix gently to avoid breaking them too much.
Pour half of the mixture onto the hot grill and cook until golden and crispy (3–4 minutes).

Repeat with the other half of the mixture

Or pour into the waffle mold (which can be purchased at this link) and bake in the oven at 356°F for 15 – 20 minutes.

If you want to pair with spiced chicken breast strips: cut the chicken breast into strips and sauté in a pan with paprika, rosemary, and lemon juice.

Edible flowers:

My mix of edible flowers for the Chaffle with Edible Flowers includes: zucchini flowers, hibiscus, thyme flowers, rosemary flowers, butterfly peas, and geranium.

You can use any edible flowers you prefer. You’ll find a list within the article dedicated to the Flower Menu.

FAQ (Questions and Answers)

  • What is the difference between waffles and chaffles?

The main difference between waffles and chaffles lies in the ingredients and their nutritional profile:

    🧇 Waffles:
Base ingredients: flour, eggs, milk, butter, sugar, baking powder or soda.
Texture: fluffy and slightly crispy outside.
Use: typically sweet (but there are savory versions too).
    Rich in carbohydrates and sugars.

    🧀 Chaffles:
Name: fusion of “cheese” and “waffle”.
Base ingredients: eggs and shredded cheese (often mozzarella).
    Texture: more moist and compact.
Use: often savory, used as a bread substitute in low-carb or ketogenic diets.
Low in carbohydrates, rich in proteins and fats.

In short, chaffles are a low-carb and flourless variant of waffles, created to fit dietary plans like the ketogenic diet.
