The bola bola tahu, or tahu bulat or tahu bola, is a Tahu goreng (Indonesian spelling) or Tauhu goreng (Malay and Singaporean spelling) which means any type of fried tofu dishes in the cuisines of Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore.
In Malay and Indonesian languages: tauhu or tahu refers to “tofu” and goreng means “fried”.
Tofu originated in China and was brought to Southeast Asia by Chinese immigrants in the region. Its first arrival in Indonesia was through the army of Khubilai Khan to Kediri in 1292.
In Indonesia, tahu goreng can be lightly fried or deep-fried, plain or battered, usually consumed with sambal kecap, a sort of hot condiment sambal made from kecap manis (sweet soy sauce), chopped chilies, and shallots.
Bola bola tahu, or tofu balls, is a relatively new variant of fried tofu from Tasikmalaya.
The tofu is mixed with condiments, shaped into balls, and then fried.
