Steps Halloween Ghost Pears

  • Follow these simple steps to make your spooky pears.

Wash the pears carefully. Peel them gently, keeping the stem intact.

Trim the base of each pear precisely so they can stand upright on their own.

Place the pears in an ovenproof dish. Bake in a preheated static oven at 356°F for about 10 minutes. This step only softens the flesh slightly.

  • Remove from the oven and let cool completely at room temperature.
Once cool, make two small holes at the top of each pear for the eyes, insert the soaked and then dried raisins into the holes..
With the help of a kitchen toothpick or a small spoon, smear the pears with raspberry jam to create a “bleeding” effect.
Create a horizontal slit for the mouth. Fill the slit with a little raspberry jam to emphasize the eerie effect.
Pour a generous tablespoon of raspberry jam onto the bottom of each dessert plate and carefully place the Ghost Pears in the center of the plate, on the jam base.

Storage
Being a dessert based on cooked fruit, the Ghost Pears are very easy to store, but keeping the decoration (the “ghost” effect) requires attention.

In the Refrigerator: Cooked and decorated Ghost Pears can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 2-3 days.

Tip: If you plan to store them for a while, it is preferable not to decorate them immediately. Bake the pears and keep them refrigerated; add the raisins, the mouth and the “blood” effect with the raspberry jam only a few hours before serving, so that the jam maintains a fresh and vivid appearance.

Serving: Serve them cold or at room temperature.

Decoration Variations (Ghost Tricks)

Clove Eyes For simpler and more aromatic eyes, use two whole cloves (decorative, not edible) instead of raisins.
Mouth Seeds or Licorice Use small flax or sesame seeds, or a small piece of licorice ribbon to create a thinner, more defined mouth.
“Blood” Effect Chocolate Syrup Replace the raspberry jam with melted dark chocolate sauce or with sour cherry/strawberry syrup for a different “horror” effect.

FAQ (Questions & Answers)

  • What is the best type of pear to use for Ghost Pears?

We recommend pears such as Kaiser, Decana or Williams, as long as they are firm and not overly ripe. They should withstand baking and handling without falling apart.

  • What is the purpose of oven baking if the pear is already soft?

The 10-minute bake slightly tenderizes the flesh, making it more pleasant to eat with a spoon and making it easier to create the holes for the eyes and mouth.

  • Can I cook the pears in the microwave or on the stovetop to save time?

Yes, to soften them quickly you can microwave them whole for 2-3 minutes (depending on the power) or gently blanch them in a pot with a little water for 5-7 minutes. Make sure they don’t fall apart.

  • If I don’t have raisins, what can I use for the eyes?

You can use chocolate chips, coffee beans (decorative, not edible) or two whole cloves.

  • Does the “bleeding” effect fade over time?

Raspberry jam tends to be slightly absorbed into the pear flesh after a few hours. For the most vivid and “fresh” effect, decorate the pears and add the jam on the plate shortly before serving.

  • Can I use a jam other than raspberry?

Certainly. Any dark red jam or preserve works well for the “blood” effect, such as cherry, sour cherry or mixed berry jam.
