Peppered mussels

in

Peppered mussels are a very tasty dish that belongs to the rich culinary tradition of Campania! The mussels (or mussel clams) are seafood highly appreciated in cooking: great in risottos but also special when baked au gratin. They are rich in minerals, especially iron, and this dish in its simplicity is much loved!!

Serve the peppered mussels with crostini to make the seafood appetizer even more complete and tasty.
You can vary this seafood appetizer recipe by preparing peppered mussels with tomatoes, a succulent variant of the traditional peppered mussels!

I also recommend other seafood recipes:

There are many recipes that derive from the regional Italian cuisine and each of them brings family traditions, typical local products and all those small variations and improvements introduced over the years. I searched the web and these are the most famous dishes by region:

  • Cuisine: Italian
  • Seasonality: All seasons

Ingredients FOR THE PEPPERED MUSSELS RECIPE

  • 3.3 lbs mussels (cleaned)
  • 1 clove garlic
  • 1 lemon
  • 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil (2/3.)
  • to taste fresh parsley (chopped)
  • to taste salt and pepper

Tools

  • Pans

FOR THE PREPARATION OF THE PEPPERED MUSSELS RECIPE

  • Personally, I always have the fishmonger clean the mussels with that special machine, but at home before starting any recipe I always check that there are no encrustations on the shells or that no beard protrudes from the closed shells.

  • In a large pot put the extra virgin olive oil and the garlic clove, letting it sauté for a few minutes.

Add the mussels and season with salt and pepper, moving the pan so that the seafood absorbs the flavors well.

  • Cover with a lid and continue cooking for about 5 minutes.

Discard any mussels that remain closed and serve the peppered mussels with chopped parsley and a squeeze of lemon juice.

  • A quick and very tasty appetizer: peppered mussels, right?? Enjoy your meal! Annalisa
