Original American Cookies Recipe

in ,

This is the recipe for the true AMERICAN COOKIES, the original recipe to make them deliciously soft and with the unique texture that only these mythical cookies have! I also filled some with a teaspoon of frozen Nutella and they turned out amazing!

Making American cookies is really easy, you can work the dough in a bowl with a spatula or in a stand mixer with the paddle attachment. To have them perfect, you must follow the recipe closely, using the same ingredients and measurements; I found that it takes very little to not achieve the same result.

The secret to making perfect cookies is to let the dough rest in the fridge and become nice and firm, and once placed on the tray, they must still be firm.

I’m sure that with the American cookies recipe I’m sharing, you’ll make the best chocolate chip cookies you’ve ever made! Be warned, once made, they become addictive, too good and so easy!

  • Difficulty: Very Easy
  • Cost: Very Cheap
  • Rest time: 1 Hour
  • Preparation time: 15 Minutes
  • Portions: 16 Pieces
  • Cooking methods: Oven, Air Fryer
  • Cuisine: American
  • Seasonality: All Seasons

Ingredients

  • 6 oz butter (at room temperature)
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar (raw sugar is also fine)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • Half tsp salt
  • 2 tsps cornstarch
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 7 oz chocolate chips

Steps

  • Start by putting the butter cut into chunks in a bowl, it should be soft, left out of the fridge for at least an hour in winter, half an hour in summer. Add the brown sugar and with a spatula or spoon start to work the ingredients, the butter must blend with the sugar. Also add the granulated sugar and continue to mix.

  • When the granulated sugar is well blended, add the egg, also at room temperature, and mix well to incorporate it into the dough.

Now add the flour all at once, and while mixing, add the cornstarch, baking soda, and salt, work everything with your hands or a spatula until you have a homogeneous dough.

  • Add the chocolate chips as well, then knead again to incorporate them into everything.

Cover with plastic wrap and let the dough rest in the fridge for at least an hour.

Take the dough again and with the help of an ice cream scoop or with your hands, make balls that you place on a baking tray with baking paper. The tray should be large because the cookies need to be spaced apart as they will spread during baking.

You can fill some with a teaspoon of frozen Nutella.

If you make the cookies in summer, I recommend putting them back in the fridge for half an hour before baking them; if it’s winter and you see the balls are nice and firm, bake the cookies immediately in a preheated fan oven at 350°F for about 15-20 minutes, in an air fryer at 320°F for about 15 minutes.

Once baked, they will still be soft, then they will harden as they cool.

I recommend letting them cool on a rack.
