  • Difficulty: Very easy
  • Cost: Medium
  • Preparation time: 20 Minutes
  • Portions: 8 people
  • Cooking methods: Electric oven
  • Cuisine: Italian

Ingredients to make the Day and Night Cake

  • 3 Eggs (medium)
  • 3.5 oz Butter
  • 1.5 cups Sugar
  • 3.5 cups All-purpose flour
  • 1 cup Whole milk
  • 1 Lemon zest (grated)
  • 1 packet Baking powder
  • 3 tbsps Unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tbsps Sugar
  • 0.7 oz Whole milk

Preparation of the Day and Night Cake

Take the cake mixer and start whipping the eggs at high speed, then add the sugar while continuing to mix the batter at a more moderate speed.

Add the warm milk, the grated zest of 1 lemon, the softened butter, the baking powder and the flour a little at a time until it is all added.

In a separate bowl, put the 20 ml of milk, the cocoa, and the sugar intended for the chocolate part, mix well and set aside… if it’s too compact, add a little more milk. It should be a batter that is not too liquid.

In this bowl where we put the cocoa, add 1/3 of the white batter for the cake and mix well.

If it does not turn chocolate-colored enough, add more cocoa and a bit more sugar and milk.

  • Butter and flour a cake pan with a diameter of 10-11 inches and start pouring the batter, alternating the light and chocolate-colored batter until it’s all used up.

  • Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F for about 45 minutes.

My name is Francesca Mele, and "Lo scrigno del buongusto" is the name of my blog. I am a true Abruzzese, and after several years with a cooking website, I decided to start a blog. I have been online for a total of 12 years now, so many of you have known me for a long time! I love cooking and I am neither a chef nor a professional cook; I simply have a passion for cooking, preparing, and inventing new dishes. The recipes you find on my blog are not copied, and even the photos are not downloaded from the internet; they are my own.
