Soul Cake Irish Cookies for Halloween, are indeed a traditional recipe, also known as Souls.
They are cookies with a shortcrust pastry base, filled with raisins or dried blueberries.
These cookies have a very ancient origin and were offered to children and the poor (called soulers).
I’m not a fan of raisins, so they didn’t appeal to me much, to be honest, but I’m always on the lookout, especially for traditional recipes, and when I was given this recipe, I couldn’t resist making it.
Once these cookies were made, they smelled too good not to try them… they were really delicious, so even those who don’t like raisins… dare to try them, you will like them!!!
Simple and quick to make, and they keep for several days!

Ingredients for making Soul Cake Irish Cookies
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 7 tbsps butter
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 2 egg yolks
- 1/3 cup sultana raisins
- 2 tbsps milk
- 2 tsps ground cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp nutmeg
- 1/2 tsp ground ginger

Preparation of Soul Cake Irish Cookies
First, soak the raisins in water and start preparing the dough.
In a bowl, put all the ingredients and mix the dough well.
Then, drain the raisins well, flatten the dough, and add the raisins to the center, then knead again to incorporate the raisins into the dough.
Roll out the dough to a thickness of about 1/8 inch, then use a cookie cutter about 2 inches in diameter to cut the cookies.
Score the cookies on top with a cross, then bake at 350°F for about 25 minutes, checking doneness.
Once baked, remove from the oven and let them cool a bit before eating.
