Wine Cookies

Wine cookies are a typical sweet we mainly find during the Christmas season in the Lazio region. They are quite caloric due to the oil used in the dough, but they are truly delicious!
Very easy to make and, once prepared, they remain crispy for up to a month if stored in a plastic bag or tin box.
Generally, when I make them, I always prepare several batches because I give them as gifts or make them when I have visitors, and they might be gone too soon.
These cookies are mainly made during the Christmas season, but I have to say that in many areas of Lazio, any occasion is a good reason to make them!!
Try making them following my recipe and let me know if you liked them and how they turned out!

Wine Cookies
  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Cost: Medium
  • Portions: 8 people
  • Cooking methods: Electric Oven
  • Cuisine: Regional Italian
  • Region: Lazio
  • Seasonality: Christmas

Ingredients for 8 people

  • 1 cup White wine (not too cheap)
  • 1 cup Sunflower oil
  • 1 cup Sugar
  • A pinch of baking powder
  • 1 tsp Anise seeds
  • 5 1/4 cups All-purpose flour

Preparation of Wine Cookies

Combine all the ingredients and add flour until the mixture becomes compact. The amount of flour might vary depending on how much the glass you used to measure sugar, wine, and oil holds.

I used a water glass as the measuring unit.

Once everything is mixed, transfer the dough to a work surface and knead it, adding flour for a dough similar to gnocchi.

From the dough, create strands and close them to form rings.

Line the baking tray with parchment paper, and place the rings on it, dipping the top side in sugar first.

  • Bake at 390°F for about 10-15 minutes.

My name is Francesca Mele, and "Lo scrigno del buongusto" is the name of my blog. I am a true Abruzzese, and after several years with a cooking website, I decided to start a blog. I have been online for a total of 12 years now, so many of you have known me for a long time! I love cooking and I am neither a chef nor a professional cook; I simply have a passion for cooking, preparing, and inventing new dishes. The recipes you find on my blog are not copied, and even the photos are not downloaded from the internet; they are my own.
