The Dalgona Coffee, also known as “upside-down cappuccino”, is a drink made with milk and whipped coffee originating from Macau, a small region in China, made famous by a South Korean actor who compared its taste to a Korean honeycomb toffee called “dalgona.”
Actually, Dalgona Coffee is prepared by whipping equal parts of instant coffee, sugar, and hot water until a frothy and soft cream is obtained, which is added to a glass of hot or cold milk.
The Dalgona Coffee became famous in 2020, during the pandemic, when it went viral on social media, prompting many South Korean and American coffee shops to include it in their menus.
Making it is really simple; it takes just a few minutes and very few ingredients to get a delicious drink perfect for summer. If you love coffee, you’ll fall in love with it at first sip!

Ingredients
- 2 tbsp instant coffee
- 2 tbsp sugar
- 2 tbsp water (hot)
- 1 cup milk
- to taste ice (in cubes for the cold version)
Tools
- 1 Bowl
- 1 Electric Whisk
- 1 Glass large
Procedure
Many recipes recommend preparing coffee, sugar, and hot water in equal parts. Honestly, I used a tablespoon and the coffee cream turned out great.
I used two level tablespoons of coffee, two heaped tablespoons of sugar, and two tablespoons of boiling water; if you prefer, you can weigh them.
The Milk – you can prepare the Dalgona Coffee with hot or cold milk, I really like the cold version. If you’re vegan or lactose intolerant, you can substitute cow’s milk with plant-based milk.
In a bowl, mix two level tablespoons of coffee and two tablespoons of sugar, add two tablespoons of boiling water, and whip the mixture with an electric whisk until you obtain a thick and frothy cream.
Fill the glass with milk and ice (or hot milk for the winter version) up to three-quarters of its capacity. Use a spoon to add the whipped coffee cream and distribute it evenly.
The Dalgona Coffee is ready, serve it with a straw that will also be used to mix the two layers.
