Biksemad is a warm dish belonging to traditional Danish cuisine.
Pieces of boiled potatoes mixed with onions and meat pieces, fried in a pan.
The dish is often served with fried eggs and/or pickled beets and cucumbers, preferably with HP brown sauce , béarnaise, Worcestershire sauce and/or ketchup, and often with rye bread as a side.
Originally, it was a way to use up leftovers from previous meals.
The term Biksemad is a sailor’s term for shredded meat, which is why it’s very likely that biksemad has close ties with maritime cuisine.
The Swedish pyttipanna, pytt i panna or pyttipanne in Norwegian and pyttipannu in Finnish, are the same dish.
