The Turkish Laz böreği is made with a variation called muhallebi (a milk pudding made with rice, sugar, milk, and rice flour, starch, or semolina) with the inclusion of corn flour and ground black pepper, instead of the semolina custard.

It is popular in the provinces of Rize and Artvin in the Black Sea region, home to many Laz, an ethnic group living mainly along the coastal regions of Turkey and Georgia on the Black Sea.

Its ingredients are phyllo dough, butter, muhallebi, black pepper, and syrup.

Unlike mille-feuille, which it partially resembles, the cream is cooked with the phyllo dough and not added later.
