Gibson (United States)

The last suggestion of 2020 is to surprise your guests during the New Year’s Eve dinner… assuming you can.

Gibson cocktail pre-dinner, a variation of the Martini cocktail, which differs due to the different doses of gin and dry martini and the cocktail onion instead of the olive. This latter idea was born precisely to distinguish it from the classic Martini and to soften its very dry and alcoholic taste.

The history of the Gibson is, like many cocktails, unclear, it is thought that the name comes from the satirical cartoonist Charles Dana Gibson, famous for his “Gibson Girls”, who ordered a special Martini Cocktail at the Player’s Club in New York: the bartender replaced the green olive decoration with a pickled onion, discovering its powerful flavor.

My choice falls on this cocktail slightly out of fashion, after watching with pleasure and attention the new Netflix series: “The Queen’s Gambit“, where Alma, one of the most interesting characters in the series, sips it on several occasions.

The old recipe was expressed in tenths (9/10 Gin 1/10 dry vermouth).

  • A little suggestion for an ORIGINAL and out-of-the-box New Year’s Eve menu.

In Anglo-Saxon countries, STUFFED TURKEY is the quintessential dish for every celebration, from the American Thanksgiving Day to Christmas, and even the New Year’s Eve dinner.

It is a single-course dish, usually accompanied by vegetables such as peas, green beans, carrots, potatoes, and the classic cranberry sauce.

    Main course: STUFFED TURKEY

On Anglo-Saxon tables, the New Year’s Eve dinner would conclude with the most classic of desserts: CHRISTMAS or PLUM PUDDING, my suggestion is to draw from Greek traditions and offer a festive sweet treat that is easy to prepare:

    Dessert: KOURABIEDES (GREECE)
