Christmas in Ethiopia:

In Ethiopia, Christmas is not celebrated on December 25th, but on January 7th, like many Orthodox churches around the world.

The Ethiopian Orthodox Church considers January 7th as the birth of Jesus Christ.

Christmas in Ethiopia is called Leddet and also Genna or Kollé depending on the ethnic groups and local communities. Since the months of the Ethiopian calendar are different, Ganna is the 29th day of the month of Tahsas.

About a month and a half before Christmas in Ethiopia, believers fast and eat only one meal a day. Fasting in this context means no meat, eggs, fish, sweets, alcohol, or dairy.

The fast lasts for 43 days and is broken on Christmas Eve with a substantial meal including himbasha.

And at dawn on January 7th with a light meal. During the day, aside from himbasha and its accompaniments, Ethiopians eat doro wat and injera with which to scoop up the stew.
