How did they originate?

It seems that the joulutorttu appeared on Finnish Christmas tables starting in the mid-1800s, thanks to a Swedish cookbook.

In the Cajsa Warg cookbook from 1755, there was a recipe for Christmas pastries in the shape of stars or crescents, filled with plum jam.
