For many years now, I have been literally in love with sweet and sour caramelized onion because firstly, I love onions, and secondly, because I find it irreplaceable and unique on certain occasions.

The preparation is quite simple, but it’s important to follow some tips during the process. As for the ingredients, you will obviously need some onions to initially sauté in extra virgin olive oil and then add vinegar and sugar to complete the dish.

Sweet and sour caramelized onion is an excellent side dish for garnishing sandwiches with hamburgers, meats, and even cheeses as it provides a great flavor contrast. So, take about 30 minutes and make this delicacy at home!

  • 4 white onions
  • as needed extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 espresso cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon sugar

Steps

To make Sweet and Sour Caramelized Onion

  • First, take the onions and peel them completely, removing the ends as well. Then cut them in half and place them on a cutting board.

  • At this point, slice all the half onions into thin slices, trying to maintain the same thickness. If you want, you can also use a vegetable slicer.

  • Next, take a small pot and heat a layer of extra virgin olive oil over medium heat. Then add the sliced onions and let them brown for a few minutes. Stir with a spoon to separate all the layers.

  • After a few minutes of browning, add an espresso cup of apple cider vinegar, stir, and let cook for about 20 minutes on low heat with the lid on.

  • To finish, open the lid of the pot and add a heaping tablespoon of sugar, stir, and raise the heat, letting it cook for another 5 minutes, stirring frequently.

  • Finally, once the color becomes amber, turn off the heat and pour the onion into a small bowl ready to be enjoyed!

Let it cool a bit before consuming. Pair it with a great hamburger and you’ll see the difference!
