In the midst of a dietary regimen, it is advisable to introduce as much variety as possible. While focusing only on proteins and not neglecting the rest, nutritionists generally recommend cyclically including red meat, white meat, eggs, and fish.

With the latter, I propose a simple, tasty, and very nutritious recipe today, without any special ingredients, thus almost always present at home. I’m talking about cod hearts, those found in the frozen sections of every respectable supermarket.

I often find myself using this type of frozen fish because I find it very convenient, tasty, and nutritious. I love preparing it with a steam cooking method to preserve the texture and flavor as much as possible.

Cod hearts, when skillfully accompanied by the right ingredients, can be an excellent alternative that is easily appreciated by both adults and children! Follow the recipe below and discover how simple they are to make.

Ingredients

To prepare the steamed cod hearts

  • 14 oz frozen cod hearts
  • 2 cups cherry tomatoes
  • 1 red onion
  • to taste salt
  • to taste extra virgin olive oil
  • to taste sage, chives, and dill
  • to taste garlic powder
  • sprinkles lemon juice

Tools

  • Pan
  • Lid

Steps

To make steamed cod hearts

  • Begin by taking a large pan with a lid and evenly arrange all the frozen cod hearts on the bottom.

  • Continue by seasoning the hearts with salt and a generous drizzle of extra virgin olive oil. At this point, add all the herbs in “as needed” quantities, including sage, chives, dill, and garlic powder

  • Finally, add an onion sliced in half and then into more or less thin slices, and all the cherry tomatoes cut in half. Without adding anything else, turn the heat to low and cook with the lid on for about 30 minutes.

  • To complete, when the hearts are well cooked, turn off the heat and remove the lid. Transfer the hearts with the help of a large tong onto a plate, and add the cherry tomatoes and onion as a garnish, finally sprinkling with lemon juice!

Advice

Do not add any liquid to the pan because, over low heat, the hearts will release all the water needed for optimal steam cooking.

Absolutely! You can replace the herbs with those you prefer most, such as sage, parsley, or basil. Instead of cherry tomatoes, you might use zucchini or bell peppers.
