Although it is easily found at the supermarket, recently — also considering its not-exactly-economical cost — I prefer to make condensed milk at home starting from only three simple ingredients: milk, powdered sugar, and butter.
It really takes just a few minutes to prepare and a few hours of resting in the fridge to obtain a milk cream to use in various dessert and homemade ice cream recipes.
The only precaution is to use ready-made powdered sugar available commercially, which contains a percentage of starch necessary to thicken the milk.
Now take a minute to read the recipe and then… let’s cook AND eat!!

Ingredients
- 1 cup (8.5 fl oz) milk
- 1 3/4 tbsp butter
- 1 2/3 cups powdered sugar
Tools
- 1 Kitchen scale
- 1 Whisk
- 1 Small saucepan
- 1 Jar with airtight closure
Steps
To prepare homemade condensed milk you only need a few simple steps.
First, pour the milk into a small saucepan and add the butter in pieces. Heat the milk until the butter melts, then, before the milk reaches a boil, add the powdered sugar.
Mix with a whisk to avoid lumps forming. Let cook for 10–15 minutes and you will see the milk change its consistency from liquid to thicker. When the milk coats the back of a spoon, it’s time to turn off the heat.
Continue stirring for a couple of minutes, then pour the condensed milk into an airtight jar, cover the surface with plastic wrap touching the cream, and let it cool to room temperature before closing the jar and transferring it to the refrigerator.
As it cools, the condensed milk will acquire a decidedly creamier consistency, perfect for spreading on bread or rusks or as an ingredient in desserts and homemade ice creams 😉.

Storage
Homemade condensed milk keeps in the refrigerator for about 4–5 days in an airtight container. It is important to always keep it well sealed.
